MSU-Northern's Brandon O'Brien (right) celebrates a touchdown catch in the first quarter of Saturday's Frontier Conference football game at Blue Pony Stadium.
The Montana State University-Northern football team closed the book on its home schedule the best way possible, by romping to a win over the Dickinson State Blue Hawks. Northern beat the Hawks 42-10 on senior day Saturday afternoon at Blue Pony Stadium, avenging a 21-20 loss at DSU back in September in the process.
Senior running backs Stephen Silva and Justin Montelius both scored rushing touchdowns for the Lights, and Silva, the school's all-time leading rusher, went over 100 yards in the final home game of his career.
The Lights led 23-0 at halftime with Kyle Johnston and Brandon O'Brien scoring first-quarter TD's. O'Brien caught his second touchdown pass of the game in the second quarter, and the Lights added a Trevor Baum field goal, while Northern's defense pitched a 30-minute shutout which included an interception by Jordan Van Voast.
DSU made it interesting in the third quarter, scoring 10 unasnwered points, but Montelius' three-yard score was one of three fourth-quarter touchdowns by the Lights. Silva ripped off a 41-yard scoring run and Derek Lear added a 6-yard run as the Lights scored 19 unaswered points to finish the game.
Northern is now 3-6 and will close out the season with a visit to Rocky Mountain College next Saturday. The Battlin' Bears upset Carroll on Saturday afternoon.
