Lights scrape Argos in a close one

MSU-Northern's Ethan Hinebauch, left, locks the head of UGF's Shaun Lau during Tuesday night's NAIA dual in Havre.

Make that two in a row for an MSU-Northern wrestling team that once felt like it would never beat the Great Falls Argos in a dual. On Tuesday night at the Armory Gymnasium, the No. 7 Lights edged the No. 6 Argos 21-20 in dramatic fashion.

The deciding match came late, as MSU-N freshman Toby Cheff pinned UGF's Dylan Lemery at the 3:35 mark. Cheff's victory pushed Northern to a 21-16 lead, and though Tucker Erickson gave up a major decision to UGF's Siers Tiernan in the heavyweight match, the pin at 197 was good enough to give the Lights the win. Northern won four straight matches, as Ethan Hinebauch, Max Payne and Kody Reed all pulled out close decisions ahead of Cheff's dramatic win. The Lights also got a quick pin from Cameron Neiss at 133 pounds, while UGF's only pin came by way of former Havre High great Myles Mazurkiewicz.

The Lights and Argos will tangle again Feb. 6 in Great Falls.
