Duane M. Meyers

Duane M. Meyers, 48, of Rocky Boy, Indian name, Oke – mao Pemotayo "Chief Walker," passed away on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at his residence. Wake services will begin Sunday afternoon, Aug. 5, and continue Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy, with tribal elders officiating. Burial will follow at the Rocky Boy Cemetery. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Duane Meyers

Duane was born on Feb. 6, 1964, in Havre, Mont., to John G. and Nancy (Knife) Meyers, the youngest of 10 children. He grew up in Rocky Boy, attending Rocky Boy and Box Elder schools. He played basketball while in school. He also enjoyed dancing in the powwow as a child. As an older child and teenager, Duane enjoyed working with cattle and horses, with 4-H. Later in life, he enjoyed playing poker and casino machines, listening to powwow music and reading. He loved round dancing and participating in cultural activities, such as being a powwow singer. Duane was very spiritual with his family, and held on to the traditional values and beliefs, but he was fun loving and enjoyed teasing his family. He had a great sense of humor.

Duane was preceded in death by his mothe, Nancy; his sister, Karen Meyers; his aunt, Alice Russette; his niece, Jennifer Big Knife; his cousin, James Russette Jr .; and his step-mother, Geneva Top Sky.

He is survived by his father, John Gilbert Meyers of Rocky Boy; his common-law wife, Lisa Belcourt of Rocky Boy; his daughter, Desert Storm Meyers of Helena; his new granddaughter; two brothers, Don "Good Voice" Meyers and John Edwin Meyers, all of Rocky Boy; six sisters, Diane (Dave) Upchurch of Stockett, Mont., Marie Sponsler of California, and Edna Meyers, Carol Meyers, Bonnie Meyers and Betty (Mark) Collins, all of Rocky Boy; his adopted sister, Nancy Meyers of Phoenix, Ariz .; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
