HHS's Schaub headed to RMC

There was no question that Havre High standout wrestler and football player, Casey Schaub would move onto the college ranks, it was just a matter of which sport he would choose to play, and which school he would choose to attend.

But the verdict is out, and Schaub has announced his signing to attend and play football at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. Dicki

Havre High's Casey Schaub plows over a Miles City defender during a Class A football game last fall in Havre. Schaub has decided to continue his football playing career at Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

nson State and Montana State University-Northern were also in the running, but Schaub felt Rocky was a better fit for what he wanted to do educationally and football wise at the next level.

"At the end of football season I made up my mind that I was going to finish up wrestling and continue on through with football. And the coaches are great (at Rocky), they are always in contact with me and checking in. And I went down there and watched some practices, and they are just a great group of guys that made me feel welcome. I am excited to get down there," said the all-state Blue Pony star.

And it wasn't an easy decision to continue playing football, and place wrestling on the backburner. In fact, the great success that he found in both sports made the decision extremely tough.

As a Blue Pony wrestler, Schaub was part of two No. 1 team state titles, as well as what he did as an individual. As a freshman (152) and sophomore (171) he took second at divisionals and followed with a first-place divisional finish last year as a junior (171). Schaub has also found good success at state, finishing third as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore and second as a junior. And this year, as a senior, Schaub was finally able to find state supremacy on an individual level, taking the No. 1 spot at 189 pounds.

And as a football player, Schaub stood out on offense as well as on defense as the HHS running back and middle linebacker. In 2010 Schaub was named the team's MVP, while also being named All-Conference honorable mention middle linebacker and running back. And in 2011, as a senior, he was the Central A conference Defensive MVP, as well as an all conference running back, linebacker and punter. Schaub was also named Class A All-State as a linebacker this past season. And to top off a great senior season, Schaub was also named to the annual East-West Shrine Game on offense and defense.

"I am always going to miss wrestling." Schaub said. "And now my younger brother wears my stuff when he wrestles, so every time I see him out there, it makes me want to get back out there. But it is something that will always be in my life, and something I can go back to if want to coach, and some day, hopefully my little boy will wrestle. But it is going to be nice to focus on just one sport (football), and be able to focus all of my mindset towards that."

Overall, Rocky was just a great fit for Schaub. The football program suited his style nicely, as does the program he plans to major in. As of now he will major in elementary education.

Schaub will give the Rocky program a huge boost while he is there. It won't be right out of the gate, but he knows redshirting his first season will pay off. And after it is all said and done, Schaub just hopes to help out the team anyway he can, especially later in his career when he is more integrated into the program.

"I know the first couple of years I am going to have to take my lumps," Schaub said. "Just like I did at Havre High. But those last two or three years, hopefully I will be able to keep everything going like I finished this year and finish my career on a high note."
