Funnel cloud reported near Big Sandy

The severe weather may not have been as strong in Havre on Tuesday night as Monday night, but Chouteau County saw at least one tornado.

A tornado watch was issued by the National Weather Service at 3:35 p. m. Tuesday. Strong winds, rain and hail were seen sporadically across the center of the state, but the closest severity reported was a funnel cloud south of Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation and Big Sandy.

According to Chouteau County Undersheriff Curt Owen, only one residence was very strongly affected by the reported tornado.

"We don't know if it was from the tornado or just the winds, " Owen said of a tree relocated from outside a house southeast of Big Sandy into the house's kitchen.

While a tornado was something Owen said he has not had to deal with in his 22 years with the Chouteau County Sheriff's Office, he said that they and the county Disaster and Emergency Services coordinator had spent the past few days getting ready.

A tornado in White Sulphur Springs tore the roof off the town's water tower, placing the city under a boil order until its replacement.
