It was a successful summer for the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team, and a pair of North Stars have been reward for the season.
Both Havre's Brandon Smith and Thurman Holdsclaw were recently named to the 2012 Class A All-State team. Both players also earned Northern District All-Conference honors.
Smith played his final season for the North Stars and is a repeat all-state performer. He led the team in runs batted in and total hits, while being the No. 1 pitcher and starting shortstop for the North Stars. Smith, who played for the Havre program for five seasons, will now take his baseball talents to Dawson Community College in Glendive where he'll be a freshman this fall.
Holdsclaw has a year left of legion baseball, but he had a breakout 2012 summer. He split time doing the catching and playing center field was excellent defensively all season long. But he really broke out at the plate in the second half of the conference season, batting over .500 in his last 15 games. Included in that run was a stellar performance at the 2012 Northern District Tournament last month in Medicine Hat, where he hit for the rare, "cycle" in Havre's last game of the season against the Medicine Hat Knights.
The 2012 Class A All-State team also includes, the Gallatin Valley Outlaws' Tanner Johnson and Gianfranco Filippini, the Laurel Dodgers' Dakota Cortese and Jay Dempster, and the Vauxhall Spurs' Colin Cleland, as well as Blake Phelps (Lewistown Redbirds), Bryton Guckenburg (Kootenai Valley Rangers), Cole Miotke (Dillion Cubs), Dylan Woodhall (Lewistown Redbirds), Jayaden Darr (Livingston Braves), Jake Capko (Bitterroot Red Sox), Jalen Garcia (Billings Cardinals), Maverick Price (Fort Macleod Royals), Riley Phillips (Bitterroot Bucs), Ryan Holder (Kootenai Valley Rangers), Scott Bye (Tri County Cardinals) and Taylor Wolstenhome (Fort Macleod Royals).
