Fire in Bear Paws, another near Box Elder

Two fires in the area were reported Tuesday, with one small prairie blaze extinguished and no current information available on another in the Bear Paw Mountains in southern Blaine County.

Blaine County Sheriff Glenn Huestis said this morning that Blaine County rural firefighters and Bureau of Land Management firefighters had responded to a fire in Blaine County mostly on the Cowan Ranch in the Bear Paws Tuesday.

Huestis said the last information he had received was that, as of 3 p. m. Tuesday, the fire was about 100 acres.

No additional information about the extent or condition of that fire was available this morning.

Hill County Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator Joe Parenteau said another fire burned 80 to 100 acres about three miles west of Box Elder. The cause of that fire is believed to be sparks struck while harvesting equipment was being moved.

Blaine County is under Stage 1 fire restrictions, as are most counties east of Hill. Parenteau said Chouteau and Judith Gap counties are expected to move to Stage 1 restrictions Friday.

Hill County had not put in fire restrictions as of this morning.
