Girl Scouts invite community to Saturday singalong

The Havre Girls Scouts are holding a "Blast from the Past" celebration tonight and Saturday and are inviting former scouts and families, friends and community members to join in the final event Saturday: A singalong at the Holiday Village Mall starting at 10 a. m. at the fountain.

"The singalongs are a longstanding tradition, " Havre Girl Scout service manager Sherri Simonson said this morning, adding, "Those girls love to sing. We have a couple of fun favorites they love to sing. "

The singalong is running just before the annual Pinewood Derby, which will have local Cub Scouts weighing in their cars at 11 a. m. and starting the runs at noon.

The activities start tonight with the Blast from the Past activities, which Simonson said will include making a collage representing the last 100 years of Girl Scouts, and preparing a time capsule including writing to Scouts a hundred years from now.

Tuesday is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the organization, which has been active in Havre for 82 years.

The first meeting was held by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low, with 18 girls meeting in Savannah, Ga. Low's intent was to take girls out of their homes and into commmunity service and active events in the open air.

A national celebration is set at the National Mall at the foot of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., for June 9. Simonson said seven Havre Scouters, from grades six through 10, are raising money to go.

Future fundraisers include an Indian taco sale at the Havre Eagles Club April 14 from noon to 3 p. m., a car wash noon to 5 p. m. April 28 at Sherwin Williams and a flower sale at the Scout House May 19 from 8 a. m. to 2 p. m.
