As the calendar turns to October, things will get very interesting and very tight as it pertains to volleyball up and down the Hi-Line.

And this past week was no exception as there were critical District 6C East matches Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The weekend started off with a five-set thriller in Gildford as the first-place North Star Knights edged arch-rival Chester/J-I by scores of 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-8. It was a typical rivalry match between the Knights and Hawks and North Star stormed back from a 2-1 deficit to win at home.

Lisa Carlon racked up 12 kills, while sister Bettie Carlon had 14 assists for the Knights. Tylynn Rettig added four aces and Melissa Pester had three blocks. Denerey Haaland led the Hawks with 12 kills, while Jimi Sangwin had 21 assists and 21 digs, and the Hawks served up 17 aces. The win was the second straight for the Knights as they also defeated Rocky Boy by scores of 25-8, 25-14 and 25-12 on Tuesday night.

It was a tough weekend for the Hawks as they lost another five-setter on Friday night, this time at the hands of their bitter rival, the Chinook Sugarbeeters. Chinook was celebrating senior night at home, and the Beeters erased a 1-0 C/J-I lead and went on to hold off the Hawks in the fifth set. Chinook won by scores of 15-25, 25-21, 25-10, 21-25 and 15-10.

Makhayla Farmer had 18 kills and six blocks to pace the Beeters in the dramatic win. Emily Dennis had four aces and 22 digs as well. C/J-I got 12 kills from Haaland while Kate Graff had 18 digs, five aces and six blocks.

But while C/J-I suffered two crucial setbacks this weekend, the crazy 6C East kept up on Saturday night as the Big Sandy Pioneers took a share of first place by beating the North Star Knights in four sets. Big Sandy won by scores of 17-25, 25-19, 25-13 and 25-22.

Kaylie Gilman had 10 kills and two blocks to lead the Pioneers, while Molly Herron had three aces and five digs. Lisa Carlon totaled 11 kills for the Knights, and Bettie Carlon had nine assists and seven digs. Melissa Pester added eight blocks and two aces in the loss.

Overall, it was a tough weekend for the area Class B netters too.

After losing to North Star on Tuesday, Rocky Boy dropped a pair of District 1B matches on the weekend. On Friday night, the Fairfield Eagles beat the Morning Stars by scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-5. Leigha Onco had seven kills for Rocky Boy and Tyann Watson had 11 assists. On Saturday night, Rocky Boy lost to Cut Bank by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-10. Onco led the way with 10 kills while Tyrah Gopher had 11 digs and four aces for Rocky Boy.

Harlem also lost two 2B matches this weekend. Wolf Point swept the Wildcats by scores of 25-14, 25-7 and 25-17 as Laci Snider had seven kills in the loss. And Glasgow beat the Wildcats by scores of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-18. In that loss, Emma Lamebull had six digs and two aces.
