Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Lacey Waid

Nearing the end of just her second year as a Havre High Blue Pony, Lacey Waid has a bright athletic future ahead of her.

Waid is a three-sport athlete for the Central A Blue Ponies, standing out on the varsity volleyball, basketball and track and field teams. Waid is emerging as a solid hitter for the volleyball program, while her play at the guard position was key in the Ponies' successful basketball season, finishing up with a state tournament berth. And now, entering the spring sports season, Waid has emerged as one of the top pole vaulters on the girls' squad. Waid also runs the 100 and 200-meter sprints for the Ponies.

Last season Waid qualified for the state track and field meet in the pole vault, and wound up tying for a sixth place finish. Her best height as a freshman was 9-6 and she's steadily becoming not just one of the top polve vaulters, but one of the best all-around female student-athletes at HHS.

Here's five questions with Blue Pony Lacey Waid as she prepares to compete in the annial Havre Lions Invitational on Saturday

HDN: What goals do you have for the rest of the track season?

Waid: "I really want to make the height that I want in the pole vault, and make it back to the state meet. I would like to at least make 10-0 or 10-6 this year."

HDN: The pole vault is a unique event, what first got you interested?

Waid: "Well, my brother (former Havre High Blue Pony Layne Waid) did it, so I guess that made me want to do it too. I first tried it in middle school, and my brother was there, so I tried it."

HDN: If you could pick one event, other than the pole vault, what event would you like to be a standout in?

Waid: "I like to do high jump, that is pretty cool, and I also did that in middle school. But I have just been focusing on pole vault."

HDN: Looking ahead, if you could pick to compete in college in volleyball, basketball or track and field, what would you pick?

Waid: "I would pick basketball, it is my favorite sport and I have been playing it forever."

HDN: Where are you looking forward to competing the most this season? Or is there a specific meet you are looking forward to competing in?

Waid: "There aren't any meets that I look forward to the most, besides divisionals and state. But it is nice (with the new qualification rules), because I can qualify anytime, and not just have one day at divisionals to qualify."
