Lights, Skylights compete at Tech golf tournament

The Montana State University-Northern golf teams opened the 2012 Frontier Conference golf season with 54 holes over the last two days.

The Lights and Skylights took part in the Montana Tech Invite, which was held Monday and Tuesday at the Butte Country Club.

The Skylights finished with a team total of 1,240, which was last out seven teams. The Lights didn't tally a team score because they only took three players to the tournament. Lewis-Clark State won both the men's and women's titles in Butte.

Individually, the Northern men got solid performances from newcomer Justin Newton, as well as former Havre star Jeremy Jensen. Newton shot back-to-back 74's on Monday, followed by a 77 on Tuesday. Jensen shot 76 in the opening round, then a pair of 78's to follow.

On the women's side, Katie Ross was outstanding for the Skylights. Ross shot an opening-round 87, then followed with a pair of 90's to finish. Ross was very consistent over the 54-hole tournament.

The Lights and Skylights have one more fall tournament. Northern will travel to Great Falls for the UGF Invitational Oct. 1-2 at Meadowlark Country Club.
