Local Golf Report: Sign up for breast cancer tourney

The Havre golf community lost a beloved member recently.

I know all of us who have played this great game in Havre were saddened to hear of the passing of Vance Blatter. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Vance as a school administrator in Havre as I am too old to have matriculated under him.

Instead, I had the pleasure of getting to know him through the game of golf, and at it was a great pleasure knowing him through the years. He, his smile and his good-natured demeanor on the golf course will surely be missed by all of us who had the opportunity to play with him over the years, and above all, he will be missed by the entire community of Havre.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family in this difficult time.

Today and Wednesday mark the end of the first half of the 2012 men's league golf season at Prairie Farms. Heading into the final Tuesday night. Schubert Agency holds the lead, followed by Patrick Construction, Bing-N-Bob's and Korb Construction. Rock Solid, Stockman Bank and Wagner Plumbing, among others are all within striking distance of a playoff berth as well.

Last Tuesday night saw Stockman score 24 points to earn high-team honors. Kyle Sheppard was low gross with a 37 and Bill Evans was low net with a 28.

Heading into the final Wednesday night, Valley Furniture is way out in front. Master Sports, Waddell & Reed and Bear Paw Credit Union round out the top four. Last Wednesday saw BPCU garner high team with 23 points, while Sheppard and Jim Kato shared low gross with 37's. Ryan Mapes was low net with a 28.

The top four teams from the first half in each night will qualify for the men's league playoffs in August.

Men's league is also continuing at Beaver Creek Golf Course. Last Thursday saw Waddell & Reed and Standard Nutrition tie for high team with 22.5 points. One-over-par was the score last week as Frank Henry shot a 37 to earn low gross. Cody Donovan was low net with a stellar 25.

In ladies' league action at Prairie Farms last Thursday, Independence Bank scored 24.5 points to earn high-team honors. The squad is composed of Julie Mariani, Terry Lillivedt, Delonna Malone and Teresa Brown. Ali Ward fired a 38 for low gross and Jennifer Kinsella netted a 27.

Speaking of the ladies, it's not too late to sign up for the annual Havre Women Fighting Breast Cancer Tournament. The tourney will be held June 30 at Prairie and will be a 3-woman, nine-hole scramble. Registration deadline is June 15 and entry forms are available at the Prairie Farms Pro Shop or by calling 262-4362. Any donations to the tourney are also welcome. There will also be a $10,000 hole-in-one prize in the event.

The tourney schedule for June also includes this weekend's annual Natalie Patrick Memorial Scramble, while the Havre Public Schools Education Foundation will hold its annual scramble on July 7 at Prairie Farms. Register at Prairie Farms or contact HPSEF. Proceeds fund small grants, scholarships and district wide projects in and out of the classrooms.
