Ponies swim fast times at state

Havre High senior Megan Obrecth swims a preliminary heat in the 100-meter breaststroke during Friday's action of the 2012 Montana State Swimming Championship as the Bison Pool in Great Falls. Obrecht went on to place fifth on Saturday.

HHS's Katie Johnson races in the 100-meter backstroke at Friday's Montana State Swimming Championships in Great Falls.

The final results might not show it, the scores might not say it, but the Havre High boys and girls swim teams were very good and very fast in the final meet of 2012.

The Blue Ponies were in Great Falls Friday and Saturday for the 2012 Montana State Swimming Championships, and both teams garnered third-place Class A finishes. The HHS girls finished with 18 team points, which put them in third in the Class A race and 13th overall. The Pony boys scored 10 points, which was also third and 15th overall.

But the Blue Ponies still shined and showed why they are a swimming force. Havre High head coach Chris Inman said that in 90 percent of the races they competed in this weekend, Pony swimmers swam personal best times in the Bison Fieldhouse Pool.

And personal bests were needed this weekend as several state records were shattered while fellow Class A power Billings Central made history. The Central boys scored 185 points to easily win the Class A meet, but that total also put them in the top three in the overall team standings – something which has rarely happened in the history of Montana prep swimming. And the Central girls weren't far behind. The Rams too captured the Central A title with 157 points and that placed them fourth overall.

"We started the year with a pretty young team overall," Inman said. "And this team has progressed all season long. It isn't too often you can say that 90 percent of your swims at the state meet were the best times of the year.

"I know that third place isn't what we're used to seeing with Blue Pony swimming," she added. "But we just didn't have the depth that some other teams had this year and we were swimming against a phenomenal Billings Central program this weekend. So I'm very happy with how all of our kids performed."

Leading the way for the Blue Ponies was senior Megan Obrecht, who placed fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke. Obrecht swam a blistering 1:14.21 in the finals to garner her fourth top-six finish of her illustrious career. It was a grueling weekend for Obrecht, who also swam the 200 IM and all three relays for the Ponies.

"When Megan got out of the water after that final, she was happy with her finish but she thought she swam a little slow," Inman said. "But she didn't at all. She looked very good in that race and did a great job. We asked a lot of Megan this weekend. She swam four events on Friday and three in a row on Saturday. And she did a tremendous job for us this weekend and all season long."

Obrecht was also excited, not only about her own race, but about competing at the state meet in general.

"It is really exciting to be a part of state," she said. "My freshman year we won our tenth straight title, so that was exciting, but every year is exciting in its own way. There are always new people to compete against throughout the season, but state is a lot more intense and upbeat because of the excitement."

The Pony girls also got points in two relays Saturday. The HHS 200 free relay team, composed of Obrecht, Katie Johnson, Lieza Reighard and Skylar Vukasin finished fourth in the consolation final with a time of 1:57.17 and the 400 free team finished sixth in the 400 free consolation final with a time of 4:25.18. That team was composed of Obrecht, Johnson, Reighard and Carona Sprinkle.

Also competing for the HHS girls was Morgan Jappe, Jordyn Eastlick, MacKenna Barkus, Anna Kaercher and Larissa Price.

On the boys side, the Pony relay teams did the scoring. Havre's 200 free relay squad finished third in the consolation final with a time of 1:39.27. The 200 free team finished sixth in the consolation final with a time of 1:59.69. Both relay teams were composed of Evan Flathers, Desmond Fialkosky, Taylor Riphenburg and Courtlan Vukasin.

The Havre boys also got outstanding efforts from Bryant O'Leary, Nick Rhines, Ben Siegel, Josh Emge and Paul Jeffrey.

And while this past weekend, the Ponies couldn't quite catch Hardin for second, in a meet Billings Central dominated, Inman said it won't diminish the year her teams have had.

"I'm really proud of this team," she said. "All the kids did a great job and the progress they made this year was awesome. I think we also saw a lot of potential for next year in both teams and that's really exciting. But they all did a great job and I'm really happy with how the season progressed."
