Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

It was a busy week as the high school girls basketball season reached the halfway mark. That means, from here on out, teams will really be kicking it into high gear with the postseason less than a month away.

The Chinook girls got things started on Tuesday with a thrilling 32-30 win over Hinsdale in Chinook. The Beeters went on an 11-0 run to start the game, but Hinsdale rallied in the second half, and Chinook had to hold off the charging Raiders in the final seconds.

Taryn Norby led Chinook with 13 points and Kayla Hanson added six in the close win.

Tuesday night also saw the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds suffer a setback at the hands of the Malta junior varsity team. The M-Ette's beat the T-Birds 56-42 in Malta. Shakayla Whitecow scored 12 points and Kristie Runsabove added 11 in the loss.

The T-Birds were back in action on Friday night and they found themselves locked in a tight District 9C battle with Big Sandy at home. HLP led 23-22 at the half, but the Pioneers stormed back in the second to beat the T-Birds 51-47.

Matelia Cline scored 15 points to lead Big Sandy. Molly Herron added 12 points and Shayna Gilead had 10. Cline also nailed three 3-pointers in the win. HLP got 17 from Runsabove, 14 from Whitecow and nine from Kallie Martin.

Friday night also saw the Box Elder Bears remain undefeated. The Bears trounced Sunburst 58-31 in Sunburst. Box Elder got a career high 21 points by Brandi Buffalo while Aricka Wolf Chief added 19.

Back down Highway 2, the North Star Knights continued to improve. The Knights took care of the Denton Trojans 41-32 in Rudyard. North Star trailed 18-14 at the half, and 26-22 after three quarters. But the Knights outscored the Trojans 19-6 in the final eight minutes.

Shelby Lipp scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Knights, who also got 12 points from Lisa Carlon.

Another unbeaten, the Chester/J-I Hawks easily stayed that way on Friday. The Hawks went on the road and blew out Heart Butte, 67-25. C/J-I had 12 different players score in the game. Nikole Wolfe led the way with 12 points, while Jenni Ghekire chipped in with 10 and Stina Haaland added nine.

Things didn't go as well for Chinook Friday. The Beeters were on the road where they fell to 8C power Geraldine, 42-39. Chinook held a 35-31 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Tigers outscored the Beeters 11-4 the rest of the way.

Makhayla Farmer scored eight points, and Kayla Johnson and Haley Swank each scored six in the loss for the Beeters.

In Class B action on Friday night, the Harlem Wildcats were soundly defeated by District 2B rival Wolf Point, 68-41 in Harlem. The Wolves broke open a close game with a 22-11 third-quarter run.

Tesche Ereaux scored a game-high 20 points for Harlem. Monique Doney added 10 in the losing effort.

Things didn't go any better for Rocky Boy Friday. The Morning Stars went to Conrad and left with a 58-32 loss to the Cowgirls. Rocky Boy fell behind 20-7 in the first quarter and never had a chance to catch up.

Sabrina Laforge scored 11 points and Tennae Singer added eight for the winless Morning Stars.

Rocky Boy couldn't bounce back on Saturday either. In Rocky Boy, the Morning Stars were beaten by the 1B Choteau Bulldogs, 51-27. Choteau's defense held Ro0cky Boy to just nine first-half points.

Singer scored eight points to lead Rocky Boy, while Tracy Day Child and Leigha Onco added six each. Rocky Boy is still searching for its first win of the season.

The Harlem Wildcats struggled again on Saturday as well. In Plentywood, Harlem lost the battle of the 2B Wildcats 69-33. Plentywood exploded for 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back.

Coco Moore led Harlem with 11 points and Monique Doney tallied eight in the loss.

In a huge 9C clash Saturday night, it was the Big Sandy Pioneers who got another big win. On the road at North Star, the Pioneers ran away from the Knights, 62-48. Big Sandy led 32-22 at the half, and kept the margin for the final 16 minutes.

Matelia Cline had another big game, scoring 22 points on five three's. Brooke Leader added 10 points for the Pioneers and Molly Herron earned 10. The Knights got 17 points by Taylor Warren, 14 from Lisa Carlon and 10 from Shelby Lipp.

Saturday night also saw the Chinook Sugarbeeters end Chester/J-I's unbeaten streak. The Beeters knocked off the Hawks 55-48 in Chester.

Pony JV's beat Conrad
