Highway Patrol assigns new troopers to eastern Montana

HELENA (AP) — The Montana Highway Patrol has assigned seven of the 10 new troopers who graduated from the patrol academy to counties in eastern and northern Montana in response to additional demands placed on law enforcement due to the Bakken oil boom.

The troopers who were sworn in Friday will participate in a nine-week field training program before assuming their initial assignments.

The patrol initially assigned six troopers from the February graduating class to eastern Montana. Three have since transferred to other locations, meaning the MHP will have added 10 troopers in the eastern part of the state this year.

Col. Mike Tooley says the patrol wants to reduce the amount of time people have to wait for a trooper to respond.
