Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Chester/J-I, Big Sandy, Chinook all on a roll

The second weekend of high school girls basketball on the Hi-Line was just as action-packed as the first. And with teams trying to move forward before the holiday break arrives, it was a big weekend for all area squads.

On Thursday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters opened District 9C play with a resounding 53-29 win over the North Star Knights in Chinook. The Beeters shattered what was a close game by going on a 16-3 run in the third quarter, as well as only allowing the Knights 10 points in the final 16 minutes.

Makhayla Farmer scored a game-high 24 points for Chinook, while Emily Dennis tallied 15. Lisa Carlon dropped in nine for the Knights, and Bettie Carlon added eight in the loss.

A second early-season 9C showdown took place Thursday night in Big Sandy, where the host Pioneers downed defending champion Box Elder, 60-48. The Pioneers led by just a single point at halftime, but chipped away at the Bears throughout the second half.

Mateila Cline poured in 16 points to pace the Pioneers. Brooke Leader added 10. Box Elder got 13 points from Lauren Four Colors and 11 by Krista Chief Stick in the loss.

Friday's action on the Hi-Line saw the Turner girls nipped by Dodson 41-36 on the road. The Tornadoes made a solid comeback in the second half, but fell short at the end. Laura Dillon scored a game-high 19 points for the Tornadoes, while Ella Billmayer and Shania Maloney each scored 6.

Friday was also a rough night for the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds as they were crushed by 7C powerhouse Winnett-Grass Range. HLP fell behind 24-12 in the first quarter and never recovered in an 80-26 loss. Shakayla Whitecow led the T-Birds with 14 points.

However, things were very good for the Chester/J-I Hawks this weekend as they opened District 10C play with a pair of wins.

Friday night, the Hawks went on the road and clobbered rival Sunburst, 65-20. Kate Graff put up 21 points and Denerey Haaland added 20 in the blowout win for the Hawks.

And the Hawks kept pouring it on. On Saturday night, C/J-I routed another rival, the Simms Tigers, 69-36. The game was tight at the half with the Hawks leading 29-22, but a 17-6 C/J-I run in the third quarter put the contest away.

Four Hawks scored in double figures, led by 12 from Caitlin Vinson. Haley Harmon scored 11, while Graff and Madeline Woods added 10 points each.

The Big Sandy Pioneers took to the road Saturday night and came away with a 52-42 win in Denton. The Pioneers led 26-23 at intermission, but a hot-shooting third quarter led to a 17-9 run and the convincing win.

Molly Herron scored 16 points, while Leela Engle chipped in with 13 for the Pioneers in the tough road win.

North Star also got on track Saturday night in Gildford. The Knights were home to take on 9C rival Turner, and they ran away with a 52-15 victory. North Star's defense held the Tornadoes scoreless in the second quarter, which led to a 28-3 halftime lead.

Tylynn Rettig scored 10 points and Lisa Carlon added nine to lead the Knights. The Tornadoes were led by four points from Shania Maloney and three from Ella Billmayer.

In Class B action Saturday night, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars got their District 1B season off to a spectacular start. Playing at home, the Morning Stars raced past the Cut Bank Wolves, 60-34. The game was knotted at 11-11 after one quarter, but over the next 16 minutes, the Morning Stars outscored the Wolves 30-12.

Jai-lyn Day Child and Brandi Buffalo each scored 19 points for Rocky Boy, while Caitlyn Gamble chipped in with 12.
