BNSF cargo train derails in northeast Montana

GLASGOW (AP) — A BNSF Railway official says a freight train headed from Chicago to Portland, Ore., has derailed in a remote part of northeast Montana.

Spokesman Gus Melonas says about a dozen cars derailed Tuesday afternoon about 20 miles east of Glasgow. He says the train had four locomotives and 57 loads of containers carrying general merchandise ranging from batteries to paper products to canoes.

Melonas says several containers spilled their contents but there was no environmental threat, and no injuries were reported.

A crew of about 40 people was shoving debris off the track with front-end loaders so repairs can be made.

About 30 trains that use the route daily, including Amtrak passenger service, are being rerouted.

Officials hope to reopen the track as early as late Wednesday.
