Ponies shock Browning at the buzzer

A Central A regular season championship was on the line, and the Havre High girls basketball team delivered in a dramatic fashion.

Both teams came out and played very aggressive early on and were evenly matched. The Ponies however, scored early and came out with a 9-0 run until Danielle Madden for the Lady Indians finally scored. The Ponies led after the first quarter 11-4.

The second quarter was very evenly matched and went back and forth between both teams for much of the quarter, and the Ponies went into halftime with a lead of 23-17.

What looked to be a game in which the Ponies might be able to run away with, became one in which they got behind and needed to climb their way back. The Ponies came out of halftime slow and the Lady Indians took advantage and went on a13-0 run until Brandy Lambourne finally made a free throw to put the Ponies on the board in the second half. Lambourne's free throw was the only free throw the Ponies made in the third quarter as they went 1-for-6 in the quarter. The Ponies found themselves down 34-27 going into the fourth quarter and had some major coming back to do if they were going to find a way to win.

The Pony girls climbed their way back making some key free throws and Morgan Mazurkiewicz making an important 3-pointer to help bring the Ponies back. Lambourne finally tied the game at 42-42 with 1:26 left to go as she made a routine layup. However, Browning got the lead back by making two free throws. HHS Coach Dustin Kraske called a time out with 3.2 seconds to go as the Ponies were now down 43-44 with the game on the line.

After the timeout, the Ponies imbounded the ball to Lambourne who passed to Peyton Filius who scored the winning layup as time expired. After a long discussion it was decided that Filius did shoot the ball before the buzzer, therefore giving the Pony girls the lead and the win. "

"It was a great game and a great atmosphere to be in," Filius said.

Freshman Morgan Mazurkiewicz led the Ponies in scoring with 13 points which included the team's only 3-pointers. Jaclyn Evans also had nine points and Lambourne had 6.

"The kids played great and it took and total team effort out there tonight," Kraske said.

The Ponies will be top seed at the Central A Divisional, which gets underway Thursday at the CMR Fieldhouse in Great Falls. Havre will have a bye in the first round and play on Friday in the semifinals.
