Short-handed Ponies compete in Belgrade

It is tough to compete in a meet as tough as the Gallatin Valley Invitational in Belgrade, when you are low on numbers, and without some of your top athletes.

But despite the District Music Festival in Havre keeping the majority of the Havre High boys and girls track teams at home, the Blue Ponies still had a handful of top performers.

The Ponies competed in Belgrade on Saturday with just 21 athletes, the total number down from their typical 50-plus. But up against a field of tough competition, both Pony squads were still able to finish near the top of the pack. The HHS boys finished in fifth place with 36 points, and the girls team finished in sixth place, also grabbing 36 team points.

Conference rivals Lewistown, Livingston and Belgrade competed on Saturday, and the Gallatin Valley Invite is typically a great meet for the Ponies to measure up. But without the entire team being able to compete, it was a small preview this season, for a select group of athletes. The HHS boys finished just behind No. 3 Livingston (39) and just ahead of No. 6 Belgrade (29). Lewistown was ninth with 20. And the HHS girls finished behind No. 1 Belgrade (115), No. 2 Lewistown (105) and No. 3 Livingston (39), finding out real quick, just how tough the Central A is this season.

"For any consideration on a team title, it is hard to compete without the whole team there," Havre High head coach Trevor VanCampen said. "But individually we had some good times and marks. And that just goes to show that our practices, and our output in practice has been at a high level and we have some kids that can compete with some of the best in the state."

Mason Case had another standout performance for the Pony boys.

Case has had a stronghold on the 100 and 200 sprints this season, and still hasn't released his grip. On Saturday, Case finished first in both events yet again. He ran the 100 in 11.44 seconds and ran the 200 in 23.16 seconds to lead the Pony efforts.

Garrett Aguillard also made his way back to the track after a two-week hiatus, grabbing a third place finish in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:52.45. Matt Emge also placed for the Ponies, clearing 11-0 in the pole vault for a fifth place finishe.

The HHS boys 400 relay also placed second with a time of 2:45.49.

The Blue Pony girls had a handful of standouts as well, as they too finished with 36 points. And Sammy Evans also had another dominating afternoon, as she placed in four individual events.

Evans out jumped the field of competitors in the triple jump, for a first place finish and a mark of 34-5. She also had three third place finishes. Evans ran the 100 meter dash for just the second time, finishing with a time of 13.45. She also leaped 15-7 in the long jump and 5-0 in the high jump, for two more third place finishes.

Peyton Filius and Ashlynn Van Voast also placed in the Ponies efforts, with Filius grabbing a fourth place finish and VanVoast grabbing a fifth place finish. Filius ran the 1600 in a time of 5:54.31 in her top finish, while Van Voast ran the 800 in 2:31.51.

The 1600 relay team also placed fourth with a time of 4:26.57, their best time of the season thus far.

The Ponies are right back on the track on Tuesday afternoon for the Malta Twilight Invitational.
