MSU-N wrestlers shine in Minot

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team is hitting the stretch run of the season. It appears the Lights are also hitting their stride.

On Thursday night, the No. 8 Lights dismantled Northwest College in a dual in Havre. It was the second demolition of the Trappers by the Lights this season. Then, Northern followed the win in Havre up with a strong showing at the Minot State Open Saturday in Minot, N.D.

Northern got a pair of individual titles in Minot, as well as nine places overall.

In all, five Lights reached championship bouts in Minot, with Cameron Neiss and Ethan Hinebauch coming away with Minot titles. Neiss went 2-0 in the 133-pound weight class, defeating Mioot's Josh Douglas by a 16-0 technical fall in the championship match. Hinebauch captured the 165-pound title by going 3-0 and earning a 12-8 decision over Jamestown's Marlon Brown in the championship match.

Also reaching championships bouts were James Petersen at 149 pounds, Mickey Cheff at 157 and Toby Cheff at 189. Petersen went 2-1 on the weekend and lost 13-6 in the title match, Mickey Cheff also went 2-1 and lost a tough 5-3 decision in the final, while Toby Cheff, wrestling unattached, was pinned in the title match. Willie Miller also wrestled unattached at 184 and reached the fifth-place match where he and teammate Jared Miller didn't wrestle off. Jared Miller bumped up to 184 and lost to Toby Cheff in the semifinals.

Also placing for the Lights was Garrett Tennant, wrestling unattached at 141 pounds. Tennant placed fifth. Beau LaSalle had a strong showing for Northern at 149, going 3-1 and placing third overall, while Nick King placed fifth at the heavyweight division.

Lights' head coach Tyson Thivierge rested several MSU-N grapplers over the weekend, and the entire Northern squad will get a break before returning to action on Feb. 4 at the Jamestown Open in Jamestown, N.D.
