Banners will welcome people to Northern

Havre Daily News/Lindsay Brown

One of the new Montana State University-Northern banners is seen on campus. The banners will soon be posted on light posts throughout Havre.

Maroon and gold banners touting Montana State University-Northern will soon be hanging on city-owned utility poles on 11 and 13th streets in Havre.

City Council approved hanging the banners last week.

The banners will be similar to the ones hanging on campus poles. especially those near the Student Union Building, said Northern spokesman Jim Potter.

The banners are an attempt to let potential students and others know they are welcome on campus, he said.

"It let's them know how to get to campus, " Potter said. "It creates a nice festive atmosphere for potential students. "

In future years, the college may be interested in putting the banners elsewhere in the city, Potter said.

Chancellor James Limbaugh, when he first arrived at Northern, made student recruitment and retention a main priority.

He noted that when he arrived in Havre, he saw only small state-owned signs telling newcomers where the campus was. He said he thought banners in the community would be a good way to tell prospective students that they were welcome in the community.
