Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: C/J-I starts strong

HDN seeks sports results

Every Tuesday throughout the high school sports season, the Havre Daily News will be running its Hi-Line Roundups. The sports staff at the HDN would like to remind area coaches and athletic directors to e-mail or fax box scores and stats immediately following all fall and winter sports competitions. Without doing so, we can't include your school in the roundups. All results can be faxed to George Ferguson at 406-265-6798 or e-mailed to [email protected].

The 2012 high school volleyball season is officially underway.

It was a light weekend of action, but area teams are now playing real matches.

Both North Star and Chester/J-I opened the season with wins last Friday night.

The Hawks won on the road, defeating rival Sunburst in a five-set thriller by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 20-25 and 15-13. After going up 2-1, C/J-I had to outlast a tough Refiner's team the rest of the way.

Jimi Sangwin totaled 11 digs and 11 assists for C/J-I, while Kate Graff had nine kills and Denerey Haaland added eight kills and eight of C/J-I's 19 service aces.

In Rudyard on Friday night, the North Star Knights also had a tough match, but defeated Dutton-Brady 3-1. The Knights beat the Diamondbacks by scores of 25-18, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-14.

Lisa Carlon had a huge match for the Knights. She totaled nine kills, 12 assists, four aces and three blocks. Melissa Pester added eight kills and four blocks, while Bettie Carlon had 10 assists and four kills, and Kiera Miller had four blocks, four aces and four kills.

Saturday was also a good day for the Hawks, who won the Sunburst Showcase Tournament. C/J-I went 3-0 in pool play, then defeated Fort Benton in the quarterfinals, Sunburst in the semifinals and Dutton-Brady in the championship match.

Chinook, Rocky Boy and Harlem also competed Saturday at the Malta Invitational, while other local teams were in action. However, no other results were sent to the Havre Daily News by press time.

There are two big events on the slate for this Friday and Saturday. The North Star Showcase will be held in Rudyard and Gildford and the Chinook Invitational will take place in Chinook.
