A gasoline spill has been contained at Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation, with a U. S. Environmental Protection Agency representative saying this morning that work to replace some contaminated soil in hard-to-reach areas will continue this week, and that no serious dangers to local residents are apparent.
"We did some air monitoring, wandered around and found nothing of concern to anybody living in the area, " said Martin McComb, on-scene coordinator from the regional EPA office in Denver. "And we have no indication that the water quality has been impacted by the spill. "
McComb said the leak apparently originated under one of the gasoline pumps at the Pastime Gas Station at the Rocky Boy Agency. The gasoline was leaking through some soils and making its way into Sundance Creek, he said.
He said the leak has been classified as a moderate spill.
"At least a thousand gallons is what we think, but it's really, really, really hard to tell, " McComb said.
The spill was discovered last week, with the EPA notified last Tuesday, he said.
He said the main pathway that the gasoline was taking to the creek has been identified, and that contamination has been stopped and the soil there stabilized.
The cleanup crews excavated most of the contaminated soil and replaced it with clean soil, McComb said.
"There's a few other places that are a little harder to get to that we're going to try to get into this week, " he said, "really just excavating the contaminated soil and putting in clean soil. "
