Foul weather gets in the way of tennis and baseball

A wet and soggy softball diamond wasn't the only casualty of this weekend's torrential rains to hit Havre and the rest of Montana.

Tennis and baseball also fell victim to the poor weather as well.

The Havre High boys and girls tennis teams were slated to to compete in the Great Falls Invitational Friday and Saturday but wet weather kept the tournament from happening.

It was the fifth straight season in which Havre has missed out on the Great Falls Invite. Twice the tournament was cancelled completely due to weather and two other times, the Ponies were asked out of the event because of lack of court space.

The Ponies last competed in the Great Falls Invite in the spring of 2007, and they have now had two meets completely wiped off the books because of weather this spring. The Ponies also had to move their own Havre Invite from Saturday, April 7 to Monday, April 9 because of weather problems.

The rain also forced the cancellation of the Chinook Tennis Invitational, which was to be held Saturday at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts in Havre.

The Chinook tourney features a full field of Class B-C teams and was only one of two regular season meets left on the Sugarbeeters' schedule.

Chinook will be back in Havre for the Northern B-C girls divisional tournament May 11-12.

The Havre American Legion baseball club also hasn't had much like in trying to play the Lewistown Redbirds. The North Stars were scheduled to play a nonconference doubleheader in Lewistown on Sunday, but that too was called off because of bade weather over the weekend.

The North Stars tried to play a season-opening doubleheader against the Redbirds two weeks ago in Havre, but frigid temperatures and high winds in Havre forced the two teams to play a nine-inning game and call it a day.

The North Stars are slated to play again at home on May 9 in a nine-inning game against the Great Falls Stallions.

Meanwhile, the Pony tennis team has just two weeks left in the regular season. The Ponies are hoping to play this Friday and Saturday at the prestigious Helena Invitational.
