Pony spikers win MSU-N team camp title

Over the weekend the Havre middle school gymnasium was home of the annual Montana State University-Northern team volleyball camp. And while team numbers were slightly down from last summer, local teams still got plenty of games in over the two day camp.

Friday and Saturday was filled with pool play, power pool play, and a double elimination tournament for six teams. Making up the camp this year was Havre, Poplar, Dutton Brady, North Star, and Chinook, which had two teams. Last year the Skylights' camp saw eight teams in the mix, but that put a damper on the Havre High Blue Ponies, who wound up capturing the team title and finishing the weekend undefeated.

In pool play on Friday, Havre led the way by going 10-0. Chinook 1 followed, going 6-4, while North Star went 5-5, Dutton Brady went 5-5, Poplar went 3-7, and Chinook 2 went 1-9.

After regular pool play, the teams finished off the day by playing in a power pool format, where Havre was ranked No. 1, Chinook 1 was ranked No. 2, Dutton Brady was ranked No. 3, North Star was ranked No. 4, Poplar was ranked No. 5, and Chinook 2 was ranked No. 6. In Pool 1 Havre defeated Chinook 1 25-22, while Chinook 1 defeated Dutton Brady 25-20 and Havre then defeated Dutton Brady 25-11. In Pool 2, North Star defeated Poplar 25-23, Poplar defeated Chinook 2 25-23, and North Star defeated Chinook 2 25-18.

Once pool play was all settled on Friday, the six teams moved into the double elimination tournament on Saturday.

North Star defeated Poplar in two games, 25-20 and 25-18, while Dutton Brady defeated Chinook 2 in two games as well, winning 25-14 and 25-12. In the second round Havre then defeated North Star 25-15 and 25-12, while Dutton Brady defeated Chinook 1 in three games, 22-25, 25-17 and 15-12. From there, Havre continued to roll through the championship bracket, taking down Dutton Brady by scores of 25-11, 23-25 and 15-4.

Havre waited while the loser bracket took care of itself, but wound up facing North Star in the chipper.

North Star defeated Chinook 2 25-19 and 25-22, while Chinook 1 defeated Poplar 22-25, 25-23 and 15-10. North Star then took down Chinook 1 by scores of 25-19 and 25-22, before taking down Dutton Brady 25-14 and 25-21.

Havre had defeated North Star in two games earlier, and did so again, this time winning 25-10 and 25-19 for the championship. The Havre squad was highlighted by varsity talent such as Davee McLeod, Brandi Lambourne, Sadie Seidel and Lexi Olson.

Northern head coach Bill Huebsch and the Skylights will hold a third MSU-N volleyball camp this week. Northern will then begin preparing for the upcoming 2012 NAIA and Frontier Conference volleyball season.
