Skylights sign standout post player

The upcoming Montana State University-Northern women's basketball season is still several hot months away. But the Skylights just got a little bigger in the post.

Ferndale, Wash., native Ashley Honeycutt has decided to play for MSU-Northern next fall.

Chris Mouat announced recently that he has signed 6-0 forward Ashley Honeycutt to an NAIA national letter of intent. Honeycutt, a native of Ferndale, Wash., will have two years of eligibility remaining at Northern. She played her freshman season at Frontier Conference rival Lewis-Clark State and spent her second year playing at Whatcom Community College.

According to Mouat, Honeycutt brings a great inside presence and will bring immediate rebounding help at both ends of the floor.

"Ashley had two good seasons of basketball under her belt before missing last year due to injury," Mouat said. "She played on a great team at L-C State and is familiar with the Frontier Conference. At Whatcom, she was dominant in many ways. She is a great addition to our program and we are thrilled she has chosen to continue her career in a Skylight uniform."

Honeycutt is a 2009 graduate of Ferndale High School, where she was an All-State pick as a senior. She broke two scoring records (single season points and all-time points), and was also named to the All-League team three times.

While at Whatcom, Honeycutt was named First Team All-North Region, and was the Co-MVP of the region. She led the entire NWAACC in rebounding at 11.7 boards per game. She was ninth in scoring at 18.14 points per game.

"Ashley was huge on the boards in her year at Whatcom," Mouat said. "She grabbed over 20 rebounds twice and led the entire NWAACC in rebounds per game. She also shot a great percentage from the field (54%) and free throw line (78%). She scored in double figures in 28 of 29 games her sophomore season, and had over 10 offensive rebounds in four different games. We are thrilled that she has chosen our program where I am confident that she will be successful as a person, student, and athlete. We have been pursuing her for two years, and I believe she will be ultimately successful as a Skylight."

Honeycutt carries a 3.3 grade point average. She plans to major in Health Promotion at MSU-Northern and is the daughter of Gina and Larry Honeycutt.
