Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Zach Plum, Havre High Football

Sure hands and speed, what more can a quarterback ask for out of one of his top targets?

Senior wide receiver Zach Plum has both of those qualities, and is looking to help lead the Havre High Blue Ponies to another successful season. Plum is a four-year player for the HHS football program, and is entering his second full season of varsity play. He was a key component on offense and defense last season, and now returns to the gridiron as the Ponies' only returning starting receiver.

Plum is a fulltime receiver and defensive back, but also saw time at quarterback last year, filling in for Justin Jensen when he went down with an injury. Plum also lined up in several different positions as a freshman and sophomore, but really found his knack going up and coming down with the ball. In Plum's first game of the 2012 season, he reeled in five passes for 40 yards, and grabbed one interception as he makes a solid case to better his All-Conference honorable mention defensive back selection from last season.

Plum is also a standout pole-vaulter for the Pony track team, while also wrestling and playing basketball in the past.

Here's five questions with one of only four seniors on the Havre High football team as the Ponies prepare for their home opener Friday night.

HDN: How does the team stay focused on the game on those long bus rides across the state?

Plum: "Some of us sleep, and some will just talk about what they are going to do during the game. When we get closer to the field we really try to make sure we are focused."

HDN: Do you have any pregame rituals?

Plum: "I don't really, no. I just try to make sure I am always warmed up by going out and doing my high knees and butt kicks, and all that. I just want to make sure I am warmed up."

HDN: What are you hoping to do this season as a senior wide receiver, and as one of the No. 1 offensive targets?

Plum: "Hopefully make All-State and First Team All-Conference. Otherwise, I want to help us earn a conference championship as a team."

HDN: If you could call one play that meant you catching a touchdown pass, what would it be?

Plum: "Spread right, 60 J-low seven. I would run a post, using my speed to get open."

HDN: What is more exciting for you, going up on defense and grabbing an interception, or going long on offense, and reeling in a deep touchdown pass?

Plum: "I like getting interceptions because they are always game changers. It changes the momentum of the game and you have to work harder to get it."

Havre High's senior Zach Plum is a two-way starter for the Blue Pony football team, and already has an interception to his credit this season. Plum is part of a small senior class for the Blue Ponies and will be a key leader on both offense and defense this season.
