The heads of the Republican central committees in Blaine and Hill counties said the speech former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney gave Thursday when accepting the Republican presidential nomination did what it needed to. They said they are optimistic that he will defeat President Barack Obama in November's general election.
Richard Cronk, chair of the Blaine County Republican party, said Romney's speech showed his contrasts with Obama, especially on how he would approach the nation's economy, and that will give him the edge in the election.
"I think he has a really good shot (at winning), " Cronk said. "People are pretty upset with Obama. He hasn't lived up to any of his promises. He just doesn't understand... business or the economy.
"I think that is a definite choice between Obama's failed policy and the hope of the future, " Cronk added. "Obama had his chance, and he didn't do it. Lets give somebody else a chance. "
Hill County Republican Central Committee Chair Andrew Brekke said the speech — and the convention — did a good job of showing the human side of Romney, "(providing) a glimpse of someone who doesn't portray that on his sleeve, so to speak. He's a very private individual when it comes to what he's done in his personal life.
"(Most people) don't realize that there's a person there, behind that, and there's always a human story behind everybody, " he added.
Both Brekke and Cronk said they think Romney did a good job showing how he would help revive the economy.
Brekke said he heard more about Romney's five-piece plan to stimulate the economy than he's heard before. He expects Romney and his vice-presidential running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, to tell more about that plan on the campaign trail.
"The idea of the convention is, it's a real kicking-off point moving forward, " he said.
Cronk said he is confident that Romney, with his business background, will persuade voters he is the best choice in the election, and his speech showed that.
"I thought he did a very good speech. He talked about the … biggest thing bothering the United States, (which) is the economy and that he is going to fix it …, " Cronk said. "I think he has some good ideas how to do it. "
Brekke said he is exceedingly confident that Romney will win in November, and that some of the people watching the Republican National Convention on television at the Hill County Republican headquarters show why.
Some said they had never voted for Republicans before. One said they had voted for Obama last time and had switched, he added.
"Quite frankly, if that's happening in Havre, Montana, I think the message is getting out that there are some real problems out there, and we need serious and real change, and they are seeing Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan as that opportunity, " Brekke said. "So, I am very confident. "
