Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

There were plenty of games to go around in boys Hi-Line basketball this past week, but while the wins came in bunches, so did the losses.

On Tuesday, the North Star Knights hosted the Box Elder Bears in a 9C rivalry. And it was the visiting Bears who grabbed the big time 82-48 conference win.

Jesse Ramos led the Bears with 16-points, Dusty Standing Rock kicked in 13 of his own and Lance Young added 14. For the Knights, it was Jordy Donoven leading the way with a game high 17-points, finishing as the only Knight in double digit scoring.

In Thursday night action, the Class B Rocky Boys Stars also suffered a tough loss, losing to the Malta Mustangs 81-58 in Malta. The Stars were competitive in the first half, but couldn't keep up, even with a game high 20-points by Wilber Parisian.

The 9C Chinook Sugarbeeters were also in action on Thursday, and managed to grab a home win. The Beeters took down Dobson 47-37.

Chinook outscored Dobson 9-7 in the first quarter, but put up double digit scoring the rest of the game. The Beeters put up 15 in the second 11 in the third and 12 in the fourth, out working the competition for a 10-point victory.

Brandon Riphenburg led the Beetrs with 12-points, while Barry Murnion added 11. Chris Weber also finished with eight for the Beeters.

On Friday, local teams battled, but suffered quite a few losses.

The Class B Harlem Wildcats hosted the Cut Bank Wolves, but it was the Visiting Wolves who grabbed the 68-56 win.

The Wildcats went up 18-11 after the first eight minutes, but the Wolves roared back in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 19-8. The Wildcats were never able to overcome the 30-26 halftime deficit.

Bud Buck had a nice game for Harlem, leading the offense with his 14-points. Skylar Speak Thunder and Wallace Birdtail also finished with 10-points each.

Unfortunately for the 9C Bears, they weren't able to follow Tuesday's win with a win on Friday. Playing on the road, Denton defeated Box Elder 54-44.

The Bears trailed early, making it a difficult come from behind attempt. Box Elder trailed 29-14 at the half, but tried to battle back with 17-points in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth.

Ramos led the Bears with 18-points and Randall Gardipee added 11.

Turner, who has had a tough 9C season this year, suffered another loss on Friday. This time it was Hinsdale defeating the Tornadoes 58-33.

The Tornadoes best quarter came in the third, when they scored 10-points. But that wasn't enough to remain competitive, even with the 13-point outing by Dylan Welsch and the 10-point outing by Lucas Reed.

The 9C Pioneers got caught in a tough battle at home on Friday, fighting Roy-Winifred through two overtime periods. But when the dust settled, it was Roy-Winifred grabbing the 74-69 win.

Both teams got off to a hot start offensively, with the Pioneers leading 22-21 after the first quarter. But after the Pioneers found themselves trailing 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter, Big Sandy outscored the opposition 15-11 to force an overtime. Both squads put up five points in overtime, before Roy-Winifred outscored the Pioneers 8-3 in the second overtime for the win.

Justin Stevens led the Pioneers with 18 points, but Trevor Lackner followed with 17. Zach Leader also put up 16 points, and Jessey Bailey added 14 of his own. Both Leader and Lackner also hit four 3-pointers each.

The 10C Chester/J-I Hawks grabbed a win on Friday, defeating Valier 42-36.

Defense was key in this win, as the Hawks held Valier to just four-points in the second quarter and two in the third, building a solid lead in the meantime. Lane Harmon and Steven May both scored 10-points for the Hawks, but C/J-I was led by Jeff Wanken with 13.

The Stars also got on the winning track on Friday, defeating Shelby 65-51 in Class B action.

The Stars held a 35-11 lead at intermission, but had to fend off the Coyotes in the second half. Shelby posted 21 in the third and 19 in the fourth, but the Stars' 30-points in the last 16 minutes were key in the win.

Parisian led the Stars with 19-points and was the only double digit scorer. But Chontay Standing Rock and Justin Rainingbird also combined for 18.

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were the only Hi-Line team to grab a win on Saturday, as they defeated the Knights 50-40.

North Star took the early three-point lead, but couln't keep pace with the Thunderbirds who consistently scored double figures in each quarter. The Knights four-point second quarter put a halt to keeping up with the Thunderbirds down the stretch.

HLP was led by Nolan Werk with 12-points and Bruce Denny with 11. Jalen Brockie also scored 10 for the Thunderbirds. And for the Knights, Jordy Donoven had another huge game, leading the way with 21-points. Karson Donoven added 11.

The 10C Hawks also suffered a loss on Friday. Dutton/Brady defeated the visiting Hawks 42-33.

C/J-I trailed just 15-12 after the first frame, but struggled to keep up on offense. The Hawks best quarter after the first came in the second when they scored nine-points, but Dutton/Brady ran away with eight in the second quarter, and 19 more in the second half.

The Hawks were paced by the scoring of Wanken and Harmon, both finishing with eight points each.

The Harlem Wildcats put together another nice game on Saturday, but suffered their second loss of the weekend. This time it was the Malta Mustangs defeating the Class B Wildcats 67-58 in Harlem.

The Wildcats got off to a slow start, scoring just nine points in the first quarter, and never bounced back. The Wildcat defense also had a tough time stopping the tough Mustang offense that finished with four kids in double digits.

Harlem was led by Buck with 26-points, Speak Thunder with 14 and Micah Shawl with 10.
