Bernard Gayton Armstrong was born to Fredrick Gayton and Dorothy Baumgartel Armstrong in Havre, Mont.

He attended Havre Schools and enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1954, graduating from high school and corpsman training in 1955 at Great Lakes, Ill. He was transferred to the U. S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Okinawa. Bernard was honorably discharged in 1958 and returned to Havre where he was employed by the Great Northern Railroad.
