Friday's Prep Basketball: HHS girls falter in semifinals; Rocky Boy boys still alive

The Havre High girls basketball team won't have a chance to win the 2013 Class A state championship. Not after the Laurel Locomotives shut the Blue Ponies down 46-35 Friday night in a semifinal clash at the Butte Civic Center. Havre falls into Saturday's loser-out bracket where the Ponies will play old Central A rival Butte Central at 11:30 a.m. The winner will face either Browning or Frenchtown in the conoslation game, while the loser's season is over. Laurel will play Eastern A rival Billings Central for the state championship Saturday night.

The Ponies fell behind in the first quarter and never led the Locomotives. Havre was in striking distance at 19-11 at halftime, but Laurel never let havre get closer than five points the rest of the way. Morgan Mazurkiewicz led the Ponies with 11 points.

Meanwhile, the Rocky Boy boys basketball team rebounded from its stunning first-round, Northern B loss to Glasgow Thursday by taking care of Conrad 60-46 Friday afternoon in Cut Bank. The Stars will face top-ranked Malta Saturday morning, with the winner advancing to Saturday night's consolation game.
