Breaking Sports: Griffins sweep Northern hoops teams

Salt Lake City was not the place to be for the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams Saturday night. The Westminster Griffins swept the Lights and Skylights, in they did it in dominating fashion.

In the women's game, the No. 4 Griffins drubbed the Skylights 72-43. The Griffins blew the game wide open with a late 11-4 run at the end of the first half, and never looked back. While Westminster had four players score in double figures, the Skylights got 10 points by Jordan Bruursema in what was their second straight Frontier Conference loss. Northern fell to 2-3 in league play and 10-7 overall.

Things went from bad to worse for Northern in the men's game. In what was billed as the NAIA Game of the Week, the No. 10 Lights were manhandled by the No. 18 Griffins, 82-50. Westminster led by 14 at halftime, but an 11-4 start to the second half did the Lights in. The Griffins throttled the Lights in almost every phase of the game, but defensively, they held MSU-N to a scant 27 percent shooting.

Devin Jackson scored 12 points in what was Northern's first loss in the Frontier Conference play since late last January. Northern also had a current 10-game winning sreak snapped as the Lights dropped to 4-1 in the Frontier and 16-3 overall.

Both the Lights and Skylights will be back at home to face Montana Tech Friday night and Lewis-Clark State Saturday.
