Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Knights stay hot

January is starting to wind down, and with each passing weekend, the intensity picks up for area girls basketball teams.

This past weekend saw plenty of key games on the Hi-Line, but it started off rocky for the Harlem Wildcats, who were beaten 50-35 last Tuesday in Wolf Point.

Chinook's Talya Johnson, left, plays defense during a District 9C girls game against Box Elder Saturday in Chinook.

Friday night saw two critical District 9C contests take place.

At North Star, the host Knights edged the Chinook Sugarbeeters 38-28. The Knights have been red-hot the last month, and a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter was what they needed to beat the Sugarbeeters.

Lisa Carlon and Bettie Carlon tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively to pace the Knights. Chinook got 15 points by Makhayla Farmer in the loss.

Box Elder's Krista Chief Stick, right, looks to pass during a 9C girls game last Saturday in Chinook.

Friday night in Big Sandy, the host Pioneers charged past Box Elder 56-30 in another big 9C affair. The middle periods did the Bears in as the Pioneers outscored them 28-8 in the second and third quarter's combined.

Molly Herron led the way with 12 points, while Kaylie Gilman and Mateila Cline each chipped in with 10. The Bears got eight points each from Krista Chief Stick and Rebecca Rossette.

The Turner girls picked up a win on Friday, thrashing Dodson 61-32 in Turner. In the win, Laura Dillon scored 22 points for the Tornadoes, while Ella Billmeyer scored 15 and Shania Maloney added 10.

In 10C action, the Chester/J-I Hawks remained in first place after dispatching Sunburst 57-36 Friday night in Chester. The Hawks raced out to an 18-8 lead, and never looked back, while the Refiners failed to score in double figures in any period.

Denerey Haaland scored 18 points to lead C/J-I, while Haley Harmon added 17 and Caitlin Vinson scored 14. The trio also combined to hit seven 3-pointers.

Meanwhile, Harlem suffered its second loss of the week, this time at the hands of rival Rocky Boy. At home, the Morning Stars crushed the Wildcats 78-42. Rocky Boy scored 48 points before halftime, and the Wildcats couldn't recover.

Box Elder's Alicia Wolf Chief, right, puts up a shot during Saturday's 9C game in Chinook.

Brandi Buffalo led the way for Rocky Boy with a game-high 18 points, while Chanel Standing Rock scored 12. Harlem got 11 points from Coco Moore in the loss.

The Wildcats did manage to bounce back with a win over arch rival Poplar on Saturday night. Harlem beat the Indians 50-43 after breaking open a tight game in the fourth quarter. Jaycee Werk scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Wildcats.

Things didn't go as well for the Morning Stars as they were blown out by the Cut Bank Wolves, 70-41 in a 1B clash. The Wolves led 24-12 after the first quarter, and Rocky Boy's offense really struggled in the second half. Jai-Lynn Day Child scored 11 points for the Morning Stars, but no other Rocky Boy player reached double figures.

Chinook had a bounce-back night Saturday. After losing at North Star, the Beeters returned home to beat Box Elder 50-36. The game was tied at 16-16 at the half, and was close for much of the way. But the Beeters closed the game on an 18-8 run.

Makhayla Farmer scored 14 points and Alana Smith added 11 for Chinook. Alicia Wolf Chief hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points for box Elder, while Rebecca Rossette added 11.

North Star was victorious again Saturday. The Knights stomped Turner 57-21 in Turner. Tylynn Rettig scored 13 points and Bettie Carlon added 12 to lead the Knights. Turner was paced by Ella Billmayer's eight points.

In 10C action, the Chester/J-I Hawks were able to stay unbeaten in league play, as they captured a 45-43 in Simms. The Hawks trailed 21-14 at halftime, but roared back via a 18-9 third quarter. From there the game was nip-and-tuck, but C/J-I was able to hold the Tigers off at the end.

Haley Harmon and Brittnee Theel each scored 12 points t0 lead C/J-I in the victory.
