Havre's Filius earns high coaching honor

It’s been a good year for Havre High wrestling coach Scott Filius.

He led his powerful Havre High wrestling team to the 2013 Class A state championship, while also being named Teacher of the Year in Havre for this school year. Now, Filius has been recognized by National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Filus  received the organization's Coach of the Year for the state of Montana. Cody Turnquist of Billings Senior, a longtime assistant for the Broncs, was named Montana Assistant Coach of the Year. Bryce Weatherston of Belgrade, the State A 135-pound champion, was named Wrestler of the Year for the Treasure State.

State award winners are selected from a committee determined by the NWCA scholastic state representative in each state. All three are eligible for regional and national awards.

According to the NWCA, Filius has coached 50 individual state champions in his 21 years as a prep coach, while Turnquist has also coached at the club level for 18 years. Weatherston finished his senior season with a 45-2 record.
