Flora Marie Vercruyssen Paulsen, 85, passed away at Northern Montana Care Center on Friday, June 14, 2013, of natural causes. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services will be held. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
Flora was born Oct. 1, 1927, eldest of four daughters to Gus and Marion (Kearful) Vercruyssen. She attended Ada school, two years at Great Falls Ursuline Academy, and graduated from Havre High School in 1945. During high school she worked for Fullmer Studio and, upon graduation, as a bookkeeper at Montana National Bank of Havre.
When he returned home on furlough, Flora married Harold Paulsen in Great Falls on Feb. 11, 1946, and returned to Fort Lewis with him. A daughter, Sherry Lee Paulsen, was born Jan. 23, 1947. They built a home on Clear Creek and lived there most of their married life.
For many years, Flora drove to Havre to work as a bookkeeper for Motor Parts Warehouse, First National Bank, and Gambles so Sherry could attend St. Jude Thaddeus School and Central High School.
Flora thoroughly enjoyed gardening, crafting, travel, walking and her friends. In 1967, with daughter raised and married, she joined South Mountain View Extension Homemakers and became very involved. Hill County sent her as their delegate to Black Hills Recreation Lab, to Bozeman as Hill County Woman in Action, and several times to Women's Week in Bozeman. She became Extension state treasurer in 1970 and later joined Blaine County Lloyada Ladies Extension Club until her death.
Survivors include daughter, Sherry (Joe) Schwab of Bellevue, Wash .; grandchildren, John, Joe-Mac, Julia; sisters, Fay Stuker, Joan Olson and Lorney (Roger) Saylor; plus numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Flora is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Harry.
