Nate St. Pierre named Stone Child president

Dr. Nate St. Pierre has been named president of Stone Child College.

The Stone Child College Board of Regents has selected St. Pierre to succeed Melody Henry as president starting Sept. 1.

According to a press release from the Chippewa Cree Tribe’s website, Henry said the reason she has decided to resign is to focus on her family.

“My decision to leave SCC was very difficult and thought out for the past year,” Henry said in the press release. “I need to spend more time with my family and assist with raising my grandchildren.”

Henry spoke with her board chair Ted Whitford about resigning in November, according to the press release.

St. Pierre is the project director for the Rocky Boy’s Children Exposed to Violence Project and an enrolled member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe. He graduated from Montana State University with a bachelor’s degree in business management and both a master’s and a doctorate in education. He is also a former college instructor who taught courses in business, education, history and Native American studies.

Rocky Boy’s Children Exposed to Violence Project attempts to “promote awareness, prevention and intervention around issues of violence, bullying, and domestic violence prevention advocacy,” the press release says.

Henry had been with the college since 1991. She graduated from Stone Child College with an associate’s degree in general business, received her bachelor’s in secondary education from Northern Montana College and her master’s in learning development from Montana State University-Northern.

While she was in office, some of her accomplishments included paying off SCC debts to leave the college debt-free, building cash reserves to over $850,000, building the Little Bear Gymnasium, a print shop, maintenance shop, garage, classrooms, locker rooms, saunas and a concession area.

She also purchased new computers, “smart” boards for all the college’s classrooms and various vehicles without putting the college into debt.

Under Henry’s watch, enrollment at the college has increased in the past nine years. According to the press release, the current year has seen the highest enrollment rate in the college’s history, and endowments increased from just $1 million to over $2 million while she was president.

Henry said she plans to continue to work after she leaves the position.

“I will teach some classes this fall at SCC and possibly do some consulting work throughout Montana,” Henry said in the press release.

Henry founded a company recently, Creative Inc., which will offer consulting, construction, catering and computer services.

“Things are going great at SCC and the new president will be in a positive position,” Henry said.
