Our View: You get your money's worth from United Way

United Way of Hill County will be out asking people to make donations in coming weeks.

It will be difficult. Economic times are tough, and most Havre people have already made generous contributions to a host of other organizations and charities.

But we hope everyone can find the money to help out United Way a little bit.

It's not easy to ask people to open up their pockets a little bit more, but it may be a bit easier for us at the Havre Daily News, because we see the benefits provided to the community by the funded agencies.

Nearly all of the agencies operate on a shoestring, depending heavily on part-time executive directors or volunteers to get the services out.

Coming under the United Way umbrella, the agencies can save time, money and effort from individual fundraising efforts.

The agencies provide valuable programs for people throughout the county.

Young people get backpacks from Salvation Army so they can go to school.

Women and children who are victims of domestic abuse get temporary housing and help in getting their lives back in order from the domestic abuse program.

People scraping to get by on minimum wage can get a free, wholesome lunch from Feed My Sheep Kitchen Soup Kitchen.

Children in abuse cases or custody cases can get lost in the complex court system, but CASA won't tolerate that. They represent the children's' interests.

The list goes on.

As everyone of these organizations has proven time and again, a little money can go a long way.

In these pages, you will be reading of people and organizations that make big contributions. Their donations are truly appreciated.

Every cent counts. Most people can't afford gigantic donations, but we hope everyone can make a small donation to help United Way, the agencies and, most of all, the people who benefit from the work these groups do.
