Pony golfers host Havre Invite Saturday at BCGC

The weather might be perfect this time of year, but already the high school golf season is starting to wind down, and it’s a very busy time for the Havre Blue Ponies.

Today marks the first of four tournaments for the Ponies in an eight-day span, and this weekend in general is a big one for Havre. The Ponies are in Lewistown today for the Lewistown Invitational, and HHS will return home to host the Havre Invitational Saturday at Beaver Creek Golf Course.

Today’s meet in Lewistown will give the Ponies a chance to see all of the varsity squads in the Central A, as Belgrade and Livingston will join Havre, Lewistown and Browning at Pine Meadows Golf Course.

The meet will also give HHS a chance to get back on the course. Last Friday, the Ponies didn’t get to complete the Browning Invitational due to severe weather at the East Glacier Lodge Golf Course, now Havre is anxious to get a full 18 holes in today in Lewistown.

The Ponies will also get a full 18 holes in Saturday on one of their two home courses. Havre opened the season with an 18-hole tourney last month at Prairie Farms, and the Ponies will be back there in a couple of weeks for the Central A Divisional Tournament. Saturday, the action shifts to the wide-open, but always tough BCGC.

And every HHS golfer will be in action at the Havre Invite. The Pony varsity teams will go up against Browning and Lewistown Saturday, while JV players from Havre and Lewistown will also be in the field.

This week’s HHS girls lineup includes the same top five Havre has played with all season. Senior Katie Beck leads the way, while sophomores Payton Howard and Randi Gabrielsen have put up consistent scores throughout the year. Steady seniors Nikki Gabrielsen and Boston Swensen round out the HHS varsity. On the boys side, the Pony lineup has changed some with Aden Passon moving into the varsity rotation this week. Sophomores Jerod Boles and Jeff Miller have been HHS’s top two scorers this season, while the freshmen duo of Kane Gabrielsen and Dustin Haas have really come on strong, and have bolstered HHS’s young, but talented lineup.

So, with trips to the Billings Central Invite and the Laurel Country Club coming up next week, Havre’s 36 holes this weekend in Lewistown and at Beaver Creek Golf Course will be critical as the Ponies continue to prepare for the upcoming Central A tourney.

Today’s meet in Lewistown is being conducted at Pine Meadows Golf Course, while Saturday’s Havre Invite gets under way at 9:30 a.m. at Beaver Creek Golf Course.
