HHS harriers race fast in Malta

As the cross country season continues to march on, the Havre High boys and girls continue to show improvement.

After running at the Cut Bank Time Trials last weekend, the Central A Blue Ponies’ season debut, the Ponies competed in Malta Saturday. And continuing to improve on their times and performances, both the HHS boys and girls ran very well.

The Blue Pony boys were expected to be at full strength for the first time this young season, but ran in week two with just five varsity runners. They still ran very well, finishing in third place with 96 points. Culbertson/Bainville was first with 73, Glasgow was second with 81, and Winnett was fourth with 140. And for the HHS girls, they were at 100 percent for the first time, welcoming Peyton FIlius to her first varsity race. Filius helped lead the HHS girls to a second place finish, earning 50 points. Glasgow was first with 28, Malta was third with 83, and Winnett was fourth with 94.

“I was very impressed with all of the kids this weekend,” Havre High head coach Darci Heninger said. “And the competition was tight.”

“But Sundance (Lodge) earned a personal record,” Heninger added. “This is his best time so far this season, and he said that he bettered his time on this course last year by more than a minute. But I really think the boys ran very well together this weekend and I was very impressed with their pack time. Once Elijah (David) and Cameron (Knapton) return our times will be even closer.”

Elijah David was expected to make his season debut for the Ponies in Malta, but did not run due to sickness. Cameron Knapton also missed this weekend due to other circumstances, leaving just five Ponies to carry the load. David is expected to be the No. 1 runner for the Ponies, while Knapton was the Ponies’ No. 5 runner last weekend.

But the five Blue Ponies that did run performed very well.

Lodge led the Ponies with a time of 18:26, more than 20 seconds faster than his previous time, and was the No. 6 overall. Brandon Robertson also turned in a time of 18:59 and finished No. 13 overall, while Brock Ross ran a 19:00 and was the No. 14 runner overall. Dylan Stewart finished in 20:59, 27th overall, and Ethan Smith ran a 22:20, 36th overall.

Filius also shined in her first cross country race, and helped lead another good showing by the HHS girls.

Turning in a time of 21:10, Filius led the Ponies and finished as the No. 4 girl overall. But as every Pony girl nearly improved on her time from a week ago, the Ponies looked strong from top to bottom in their second place finish. Haley Ohm ran a 21:25, sixth overall, Morgan Mazurkiewicz ran a 21:40, eighth overall, Kiana Robertson ran a 23:16, fifteenth overall, McKenna Barkus ran a 23:48, seventeenth overall, Meggie Zook ran a 25:08, twenty seventh overall, and Tori Mazurkiewicz ran a 26:07, thirty second overall.

“Peyton Filius did very well, but in her first race, she was very, very nervous,” Heninger said. “But I told her not to worry about it, and she did very well. But a lot of the girls improved on their times and ran better than they did last week. I could tell they were more excited than nervous this time, and that made me happy.”

The races will continue to get tougher as the schedule progresses, and that is especially true with the Ponies’ short turnaround this week. The Ponies will travel to Lewistown on Thursday.
