Agnes Holmen

Agnes M. Holmen, 91, passed away on Sept. 26, 2013 at Northern Montana Hospital of natural causes. A private graveside service was scheduled for today, Sept. 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Highland Cemetery in Havre.

Arrangements have been made with Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.

Agnes was born Nov. 5, 1921, at the family farm in Tolna, N.D. At a young age, she moved with her family to Lakota, N.D., where she worked beside her father on the new farm. During that time, she and her brother trapped weasels and mink for spending money. She graduated from Lakota High School in 1940.

Agnes married La Vern J. Holmen on May 3, 1942, and moved to San Francisco to be near Vern before he was shipped overseas. On his return in 1945, they settled in Devil’s Lake, N.D. In 1962, they moved to Havre, Mont., which she grew to love. In 1968, Vern and Agnes had purchased the first of three service stations. She was the bookkeeper and enjoyed the many friends and customers who popped in to visit and have coffee. They retired in 1981.

In her later years, she enjoyed traveling around the country, especially her many trips to Branson, Mo. She loved to dance and country music was her passion.

Agnes is preceded in death by her husband, Vern, in 1995 and her sister Evelyn. Agnes is survived by her son, Harlan Holmen of Havre, and sister Lilian of Waurhegan, Ill., as well as many nieces, nephews and her longtime friend and companion, Jean Anderson.
