Chinook earns key District 6C East wins

It’s hard to believe, but the high school volleyball season has already reached the midway point. This coming weekend, some teams will take a break from conference play to participate in showcases in Fort Benton and Chester, but soon enough, the conference races will heat back up again.

As for this past week of prep volleyball on the Hi-Line, the action got going last Tuesday as North Star swept rival Chester/J-I by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-12.

It’s been a tough season for the Hawks, who got three kills, one block and eight digs from senior Denerey Haaland in the loss to the Knights in Rudyard. Meanwhile, North Star was led by Bettie Carlon and Tylynn Rettig, who each recorded seven kills. Carlon also had two blocks, three aces and 18 digs, while Rettig had a match-high 26 digs. Graysen Spicher totaled 15 assists and five service aces.

As good as things went for North Star on Tuesday night, they went even better for Chinook on Thursday. Playing the Knights at home, the Sugarbeeters swept the match by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-22.

It was a big District 6C East win for Chinook, which got 10 kills, eight blocks and three aces by Mahkayla Farmer. Emily Dennis added 20 digs. North Star was led by seven kills from Melissa Pester. Tylynn Rettig added 33 digs and Kiera Miller had six stuff blocks.

North Star got back on track as well. Playing at home, the Knights thumped the Valier Panthers by scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-18. In the easy win, North Star was paced by Bettie Carlon’s seven kills and four aces. Mackenzie Hansen and Melissa Pester were big on defense as well. Hansen had 18 digs and Pester totaled three blocks for the Knights.

Non-conference play didn’t go as well on Saturday for C/J-I. On the road in Dutton, the Hawks were swept by Dutton-Brady by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-15.
