Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

A big week for streaking Big Sandy spikers

Another busy week of volleyball is in the books on the Hi-Line. And though the weeks started with some big matches, many area teams took time out on Saturday to play in non-conference tournaments.

The Big Sandy Pioneers had a great week, starting off by beating Geraldine on Thursday night. The Pioneers bested the Tigers by scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-22. Molly Herron had 12 kills and Kaylie Gilman had four stuff blocks for the Pioneers. Kylie Cline added seven service aces in the win.

Thursday didn’t go as well for a couple of other 6C East teams.

In Rudyard, the North Star Knights were beaten by Dutton-Brady in four sets, by scores of 19-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20. Against the Diamondbacks, the Knights got 13 kills and four aces from Tylynn Rettig, while Melissa Pester had three blocks at the net.

Meanwhile, in Chester, the host Chester/J-I Hawks lot in straight sets to Sunburst. The Refiners beat the Hawks by scores of 27-25, 25-11 and 25-17. Erin Wolfe had four kills and 13 digs for the Hawks, while Madeline Woods totaled two aces and a block.

Both area Class B teams were back in action on Friday night.

In Poplar, the Harlem Wildcats lost a tough match against the Poplar Indians, by scores of 25-11, 14-25, 25-12 and 25-14. Harlem was led by Monique Doney with four kills and Coco Moore with three service aces.

Rocky Boy was also swept by Fairfield in a District 1B matchup Friday night. The powerful Eagles beat the Morning Stars by scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-6, while in Class C action, Fort Benton swept Hays-Lodge Pole by scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-5 in Fort Benton.

Most of the area Class C teams were in action at mid-season tournaments on Saturday.

In Chester, at the Chester/J-I Showcase, the host Hawks were joined by Big Sandy, while Northern C powerhouse Belt was also in attendance. The tournament was a round-robin format with teams playing each other in a one game to 30 match. At the end of the day, belt finished with the most wins, while Big Sandy was third. Sunburst took second, while Centerville finished fourth, C/J-I fifth and Valier sixth.

Chinook and North Star were in action at the Fort Benton Tournament Saturday afternoon. The tournament started with a round-robin format, then a playoff. The Sugarbeeters and Knights faced off in one semifinal with North Star winning by scores of 25-17 and 25-17. Fort Benton beat Cascade in the other semifinal, then the Longhorns took care of North Star in the championship match, by scores of 25-14 and 25-14.

The Fort Benton tournament also featured Great Falls Central, Power, Highwood and Dutton-Brady.

Rocky Boy was back on the floor Saturday night for another 1B tilt, this time at Shelby. But things didn’t go as planned for the Morning Stars as they were swept by the Coyotes by scores of 25-9, 25-6 and 25-13. Teisha Big Knife paced the Morning Stars with six kills and one ace.
