A Rocky Boy man will spend more than two years in federal prison for beating a woman and sending her on an emergency flight to a Great Falls hospital.

Nelson Travis Alexander, 47, had pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury filed as a result of the Dec. 2 attack.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge Dana Christensen in federal court in Great Falls this week sentenced Alexander to 27 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Alexander attacked the woman without warning, striking her in the face with his fists and breaking her nose, fracturing her jaw and causing severe swelling to her face, a press release from the office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana said.

The woman was transported to the Great Falls hospital and spent several days there before she was released.
