Short-handed Ponies compete hard in Bozeman

It isn’t often that the Havre High wrestling team falls out of the top two or three in team standings at the conclusion of a tournament.

It happened this time weekend, but that is a testament to the kind of competition the Blue Ponies face on a week-to-week basis.

Friday-Saturday, the Central A Ponies faced a tough field at the Tom LeProwse Memorial Open in Bozeman.

The Ponies finished as the No. 8 team with 144 points. Great Falls High was first with 255, while Missoula Big Sky was second with 194, and Forsyth was third with 185. Missoula Sentinel, Bozeman, Helena Capital and Colstrip also finished ahead of the Ponies in the team standings.

And in rare fashion, the Ponies were nearly split right down the middle when it came to placing in the top six or not. The Ponies aren’t wrestling at 100 percent, but when they are, they have made it a habit of pushing the majority of their grapplers deep into tournaments. In Bozeman, seven individuals placed while seven came up short.

The Ponies were open at 106 pounds and 195 pounds. Tate Munyon (98), Dane Flammond (126), Gunnar Aageson (145), Jared Laux (160), Jake Williams (170), Dustin Odegard (182), and Travis Adams (285) all wrestled hard, but came up short on the weekend.

The HHS grapplers who did place, continued to perform well. Any losses didn’t come until after the quarterfinals, as Keegan Kennelly (113), Grayson Brenna (120), Dylan Stewart (126), Thomas Gruber (132), Parker Filius (138), Jase Stokes (152), and Tyler Adams (220) all placed in the top six, though the Ponies did not get any No. 1 finishes.

Brenna, Adams, and Filius all took second place. Brenna fell in 3:21 in the finals, but did earn a major decision and two falls prior to the loss in the chipper. Filius lost 11-2 in the finals after running into a very familiar Austin Shupe of Great Falls High once again. Filius had a first round bye, but earned a technical fall and a 9-6 decision before running into Shupe. Adams suffered a 3-1 loss in the 220-pound finals, but earned his spot after a 6-1 decision and win by fall prior.

Kennelly took third place by earning a win to finish off his weekend. His loss came after the quarterfinal round, but in the third-place match Kennelly earned a win by default over Clay Stillwagon of Butte Central. Kennelly also earned two pins to start his weekend, as well as a major decision win on route to another big weekend.

Stewart, Gruber, and Stokes all finished in sixth place. Stewart lost his placing match by way of major decision, while Gruber lost a 4-0 decision, and Stokes was pinned.

The Ponies will look to get back on track at the Cut Bank Invitational in Cut Bank Friday and Saturday.
