HHS girls swim to a Class A Invite title

It was a long layoff for the Havre High boys and girls swim teams. But when the Blue Ponies finally got back in the pool, it was business as usual.

Havre had a strong showing at Friday’s Class A Invitational held in Hardin. The Blue Pony girls captured first place in the meet with 188 points, upending defending state champion Billings Central, which scored 154 points. Hardin was third with 86 points. On the boys side, the Rams were too strong, scoring 210 points to place first. Hardin was second with 103 points, while the Blue Ponies were third with 69.

The HHS girls’ depth helped the Ponies shine in Hardin as Havre was strong in the relays and freestyle races. Havre placed three teams in the 200 Free Relay, including the winning team of Lieza Reighard, Morgan Jappe, Aubri McCann and Lita Cammon. The Havre B team of Megan Malone, Hannah Pepprock, Alara Vogel and Megan Smith placed third in the race, while the C team of Hannah Bean, Hailee Kilgore, Adrienne Miller and Rachel David was sixth. The Ponies also racked up points in the 400 Free Relay, as Reighard, Martin, Jappe and Cammon finished second and Mckenna Barkus, David, Kilgore and Carly Rennick paced third. In the 200 Medley Relay, Havre finished second and third. The A team, of Smith, Aubri McCann, Martin and Barkus was second, while the B team composed of Malone, Pepprock, Vogel and Jaden Korb placed third.

Havre had a great day individually, too.

The Ponies dominated the freestyle races. In the 200 Free, Reighard finished second at 2:33.29, Jappe third at 2:37.22 and David sixth at 3:09.23. In the 50 Free, McCann placed second at 28.43, Martin third at 29.45, Malone fourth at 30.93, Barkus fifth at 31.20 and Carly Rennick sixth at 33.19. In the 100 fee, Reighard was again second, with a time of 1:02.97, while Smith was third (1:07.42), Malone was fourth (1:09.93) and Jappe was fifth (1:10.73). And in the grueling 500 Free, Cammon was second at 6:23.59, Pepprock was third at 6:49.85 and Barkus was fourth at 7:22.85.

Cammon and Martin also placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 Butterfly, while McCann, Pepprock and Vogel finished second through fourth, respectively, in the 100 Breaststroke. Smith placed third for the Ponies in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:16.51.

The Havre boys had a hard time keeping up with the powerful Rams, as well as the host Bulldogs. Still, Ben Seigel finished second in the 50 free with a time of 26.08 and second in the 500 Free with a time of 6:51.72. Sundance Lodge placed fourth in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:23.49 and fifth in the 100 Free with a time of 1:06.32. Tomaso Parrone, Shandon Oberquell and Zach Barnes also swam well for the young Blue Pony boys team.

Havre also got a fourth place in the 200 Medley Relay, a fourth in the 200 Free Relay and a second in the 400 Free Relay.

Now, with the important Class A Invite behind them, the Ponies have three more meets before the State Swim Meet next month. Havre will attend the Great Falls Invitational this Saturday at the Swarthout Fieldhouse Pool in Great Falls.
