Lights finish eighth in Iowa

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team is one of the best in the NAIA, no doubt. But to prove it, the Lights need to be at full strength, and they certainly weren’t this past weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.

Northern was seeded No. 2 at the NAIA National Duals this past weekend, but the No. 2 Lights had some major holes in their lineup, and it led to an eighth-place finish. Missing from MSU-N’s main dual team this weekend was top-ranked 125-pounder Aaron LaFarge, as well as Duell Stadel, who wrestles at both 125 and 133 pounds. The Lights were also without All-American Kody Reed at 184 pounds, and as a result, it was and up and down showing.

Northern opened the tournament with a 36-12 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday morning as the Lights won six matches in all. But in the quarterfinals, MSU-N came up agonizingly short as eighth-ranked Cumberland University of Tennessee beat the Lights 22-16. Northern got big wins from Riley Miller (125), Cameron Neiss (133), Mickey Cheff (157), Ethan Hinebauch (165) and Jared Miller (174), but it wasn’t enough to offset some tough losses, and the forfeit at 184 pounds.

In the loser-out bracket, the Lights edged Oklahoma City 24-0, but then they lost a heartbreaker to third-ranked Missouri Valley, 27-21. Neiss, Hinebauch, Mickey Cheff and Toby Cheff were victorious in the close loss, which dropped Northern into the seventh-place match. And again, the Lights came up just short. Against an Indiana Tech team they dominated last month in Great Falls, the short-handed Lights fell 24-22. Miller, Niess, Tommy Cooper, Hinebauch and Toby Cheff all won matches in the dual.

After going 2-3 in Iowa, the Lights return home to face Western Wyoming in a dual meet Saturday night. The action starts at 7 p.m. at the Armory Gymnasium.
