Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Morning Stars, Wildcats are moving on

Two Hi-Line girls basketball teams are moving on to the divisional round after district tournaments this past weekend. Surprisingly, one of them is not the Chester/J-I Hawks.

A dream regular season turned into a nightmare for the Hawks at the District 10C tournament this past weekend in Conrad.

First, C/J-I lost its first game against a 10C opponent in over four years when the Hawks were upset by Simms-Augusta, 47-36 in Saturday night’s 10C title game. C/J-I’s offense never got on track against the Tigers, and by the time it did, an 18-point third quarter wasn’t enough to come to mount a comeback. In the championship game, Denerey Haaland scored 10 points for the Hawks, but double-digit scorers Haley Harmon and Allix Goldhahn were held to a combined five.

And things got worse for C/J-I Monday night. In a 10C challenge game, the Hawks fell again, this time to Dutton-Brady, 42-39. The loss left C/J-I out of the Northern C, after the Hawks finished third there a year ago and went 16-2 this winter.

The Hawks were in front of the Cardinals 23-20 at halftime, but they managed just 16 points in the final 16 minutes. Goldhahn scored 13 points and Haaland and Erin Wolfe each added 10, but it wasn’t enough as C/J-I’s season came to a heartbreaking end. The Hawks did dismantle Heart Butte 73-34 in Friday’s semifinals behind 21 points from Goldhahn and another 10 by Peyton Cole.

It was a better weekend for the two area Class B teams. Both the Rocky Boy Morning Stars and the Harlem Wildcats made it out of the district tournament phase and will move on to the Northern B in two weeks.

At the 1B tourney in Cut Bank, the Morning Stars battled back from a first-round loss to Conrad to reach the consolation game and earn a spot in the Northern B for only the second time since Rocky Boy moved up to Class B.

Saturday afternoon, Rocky Boy lost to Conrad for the second time in the tourney. In the consolation game, the Cowgirls beat the Morning Stars 46-37, Rocky Boy led 13-10 after the first quarter, but an 18-7 run by the Cowgirls pushed them into the lead for good. Chanal Standing Rock scored 11 for Rocky Boy and Lauren Four Colors added nine.

Saturday morning, Rocky Boy punched its ticket to the Northern B with a 60-56 win over Cut Bank. The Morning Stars trailed the Wolves 32-30 at halftime, but a 17-9 run in the third quarter gave the Morning Stars the lead, and they held off the Wolves in the final minutes.

Standing Rock poured in a game-high 24 points in the huge win, while Four Colors chipped in with 13 points.

In the opener Thursday, the Morning Stars lost to the Cowgirls 64-52. Standing Rock scored a game-high 20 while Jai-lynne Day Child tallied 11.

Meanwhile, Harlem also lost its opening game of the District 2B tourney Thursday in Malta, falling to the Glasgow Scotties 43-32. Teche Ereaux scored 11 points as the Wildcats dropped into loser-out-play.

And in the pivotal consolation game, Harlem topped Plentywood 49-40 to advance to the divisional tournament. Harlem held a slim 21-18 lead at the half, then out-scored Plentywood 28-22 the rest of the way.

Ereaux led the way again for Harlem with 14 points, while Tecia Cliff added 11 as Harlem reached the Northern B for only the second time in the last 12 years.

Both Rocky Boy and Harlem will now have a week off before the Northern B, which runs March 6-8 in Conrad.
