KRTV to broadcast channels to Havre

The days of over-the-air television are alive again in Havre.

KRTV Channel 3 in Great Falls says it is now providing "high quality digital signal to the area."

The digital translator on Cement Hill north of Havre began televising KRTV's signal last week.

People living 20 miles north, west and east of Havre should be able to get the signal, said Marlowe Rames, the station's chief engineer.

Rames said he recommends a rooftop antenna for the best reception, but in many cases, old-fashioned rabbit ears on the TV set can work.

The Cement Hill translator will also carry Great Falls CW, and that should be available in the same area, he said.

It has been years since any downstate television station has provided an over-the-area signal to Havre.

Until now, people wanting to receive television had to buy cable or satellite, he said.

People can watch KRTV on Channel 3.1, while CW is available on channel 3.2, he said.

Some stores in the area already sell rooftop antennas, he said, while the station is contacting others to see if they would be interested.

He added people living in areas west of Kremlin will be able to get the signal, as will those as far east as Chinook. The station already has a translator in the Chinook area, he said.

People living in Chester and areas west can receive signals from KRTV and several other stations from towers in the Sweetgrass Hills, he said.

The new signal will not be enough to satisfy some customers who want a variety of choices, he said.

"But a lot of people, especially older people, just like to watch a program and then and keep up on local news and high school sports," he said, and added that is KRTV's speciality.

CW programming is geared toward younger viewers, he said.

Marlowe said anyone with questions about the translator can contact him at [email protected].
