Ponies roar to a Lions Invite sweep

Havre track teams make use of a great day at the HMS Track

It typically isn’t a good thing when winter weather interrupts the spring sports season, but this time around, things worked out alright for the Havre High track and field teams.

The annual Lions Havre Invite was scheduled for Saturday, but winter storm warnings caused a delay in the action. Instead, the invite was pushed to Monday afternoon, and the weather couldn’t have been better at the Havre Middle School Track. The numbers did take a small hit as the postponement kept some teams from making the trip, but eight teams still faced off in what turned out to be a very competitive afternoon.

And in their home meet, both the Central A Blue Pony boys and girls grabbed No. 1 team finishes. The HHS girls earned 120 points, outdoing second-place Malta with 117 and third-place North Star with 110. Chinook also finished with 98, followed by Whitewater with 26, Harlem with 14, Turner with eight, and Box Elder with two. The HHS boys finished with 191 points, as Box Elder was a strong second with 83, and North Star was a distant third with 65. Chinook also finished with 59, while Harlem finished with 43, followed by Malta with 38, Turner with 29, and Whitewater with 10.

“Today was a nice day to be up here on the track,” Havre High head coach John Ita said. “And those teams that made the trip are good teams. North Star and Malta are both very tough teams, we just wish Lewistown could have made it, but I think it was their loss not being here, they would have faced some very good competition today.”

Eight girls placed in multiple individual events for the Ponies.

Haley Ohm helped lead the Ponies with two No. 1 finishes. She ran a 5:47.00 in the 1,600 meters and a 13:34.00 in the 3,200, as she dominated the distance events. But Rachel David also had a standout day in the middle distance races. David was first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.00, and second in the 800 with a time of 2:34.00. Meggie Zook also took fourth in the 1,600 (6:50.00) and fourth in the 800 (4:04.00).

Naomi Terry took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.28, and placed in the long jump with a leap of more than 14-7. In the field events, Martha Stocker continues to have a great season. Stocker took first in the shot put with a toss of 33-3, as well as second in the discus with a toss of 98-5. Carliegh Rennick took sixth in the discus (83-0) and sixth in the javelin (81-8), while Ceyara Plante took third in the high jump (4-6), and fifth in the triple jump (29-3).

Lacey Waid placed in two events for the Blue Ponies and set a new Havre High School record with her efforts. Waid cleared 4-4 in the high jump for a sixth-place finish, but dominated the pole vault. Waid cleared 10-3 in the pole vault, good enough for a No. 1 finish, and a place in the record books.

“It was a pretty good day,” Waid said. “And it was finally a nice day to vault, it wasn’t snowing or raining. But I wasn’t even thinking about the (school) record, my goal is to just get 11-0 this year. I just warmed up and felt good, and I wasn’t even sure what height I was at, I was just like ‘What? I just cleared 10-3?’ I don’t really pay too much attention to that, I just jump.”

The 4x400 relay team also took first with a time of 4:30.50, while the 4x100 relay team took second with a time of 54.90.

The Havre High boys had a great outing, too, as the Ponies got several athletes to place in multiple events.

And Kade Rismon and Mike Loftus both helped lead the boys’ efforts with two No. 1 finishes each. Rismon earned his top finishes with a throw of 42-5 in the shot put, and a throw of 123-8 in the discus. And Loftus earned his with a time of 12.05 in the 100, and a time of 24.24 in the 200. Rismon placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 136-0. Ryne Antley placed in three events, including his first-place finish in the javelin. Antley had a throw of 154-4, and he placed fifth in the shot put (37-1) and fifth in the discus (107-3). Kyle Duitsman placed second in the discus (116-3) and sixth in the shot put (36-2), and Tommaso Perrone placed third in the 400 (57.65) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (53.31). John Faber took third in the 100 (12.29) and third in the 200 (24.96), and Nick Keller took sixth in the pole vault (7-6) and second in the high jump (5-4).

Overall, it was a great day for the HHS boys, as the points poured in from everywhere.

“I was actually surprised the weather turned out this nice,” Havre’s Gunnar Aageson said.

“We had a little wind, but that helped in some events. And we still have kids moving around, and trying different events, but we are narrowing things down. We still have room for improvement, and some of us are starting to peak now, and some of us might peak at the end of the season, but there is always room for us to improve.”

Nate Rimson placed in three events as well, including a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (9-6), a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (37-4), and a second-place finish in the long jump (18-6). Brock Wood also took fourth in the 100 (12.39), but won the high jump with a height of 5-6. And Aageson took fifth in the 200 and won his first ever pole vault event with a height of 12-0.

James May also took second in the 300 hurdles (50.54), while Thomas Gruber took second in the pole vault (11-0), Brock Ross took fifth in the 3,200 (12:27.00), and Cameron Knapton took sixth in the 3,200 (13:16.00).

The HHS 4x100 team also took first with a time of 46.71, as did the 4x400 team with a time of 3:57.00.

Coach Ita liked what he saw from all of his athletes Monday, he just hopes the growth continues over spring break with no competition until Tuesday, especially with kids finally starting to settle into the events they perform the best in.

“The Easter break always makes me kind of nervous,” Ita said. “But then again, we have tired bodies and some of these kids need the break. I hope we don’t (take a step back), but if it stays nice, we hope some of the coaches can get some kids up here to high jump or pole vault. But we are starting to see the kids settle in. I don’t think we will find a 110 hurdler this year, but the kids are finding out which events they can be the most successful in.”

Next Tuesday the Ponies will have a dual meet with Great Falls high at the Havre Middle School Track in Havre.
