Harlee Boucher and the Havre High fastpitch softball team will play the Lewistown Golden Eagles in a Central A game today in Havre. The Ponies were set to host the Eagles, and other teams in the Havre Invitational last Saturday, but the event was cancelled due to poor weather. Today's game starts at 1 at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field.
Spring rain is always a threat to softball games, but the rain that rolled through Havre over the weekend shut down an entire tournament.
Saturday, the Havre High softball team was poised to host the annual Havre Invite at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field in Havre. But rain rolled over the Hi-Line and instead, the tournament was canceled and the Central A matchup between the Blue Ponies and Lewistown Golden Eagles was postponed.
Today, the Ponies, 2-2 in the conference standings and 4-2 overall, and Eagles will take the field in Havre at 1 p.m. The rest of the nonconference opponents, Conrad, Glasgow, Shelby and Cut Bank, which were also scheduled to play in Havre Saturday, will move on with the rest of their schedules.
The matchup between the Ponies and Eagles will prove to be important, adding to the quick reschedule. The Ponies are looking to take their game back to the state level this season, and a win over the Eagles could prove to be the way in. In early April, the Ponies and Eagles competed in a five-inning game at the Belgrade Jamboree, where the Eagles took the 3-1 win. That loss does not hurt the Ponies. But this afternoon HHS will look to prove they are the better team when it counts, and after several weeks of steady improvement.
Lewistown has a talented squad that can swing the bats very well. The Eagles proved that with 11 runs off of 10 hits in a loss against Belgrade. The roster houses talented players like Teale Dannel, Ali Gremaux, Maddie Comes, Miller, Jessica Kindzerski, Nora Weichel, Karlei Southworth, Shelby Alexander, Mikayla Comes and Paige Towne.
For Havre, Rachel Majeres will get the pitching start like previously planned, and will have to stay close to perfect. Dani Wagner, Paige Henderson and Scout Boucher have led the Pony bats so far, and should lead in garnering the run support needed today. Majeres has also been helping her own cause at the plate, while Tori Mazurkiewicz, Morgan Mazurkiewicz, Harlee Boucher, Shaniah Carlson, China Bohn and Jordyn Warren have also been coming around.
Instead of getting two games Saturday, the Ponies will have to settle for one important game today. At 1 p.m. the Ponies and Eagles will play at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field in Havre.
